Rod ActionThe term "action" refers to the amount of flex a rod will exhibit and also where the flexing occurs along the length of the rod when it is loaded. Typical loads for a rod would be casting a weighted lure or fighting a fish. Fast action rods will tend to flex predominantly in the upper third portion of its length. Fast action rods also tend to return to their straight "unloaded" profile quicker than a slower action rod will. Moderate action rods will tend to flex throughout the upper two thirds of its length, spreading the forces of the load over a larger area of the rod than a fast action rod. Slow action rods will flex throughout their entire length when loaded. Of course there are rod actions that fall in between and even outside of the three examples given. The terms extra-fast, moderate-fast, extra-slow and even progressive may be used to describe them. |
